Now that a newly built cruise terminal in Galveston Wharves can accommodate the world’s largest cruise ships, the Texas Gulf Coast city is expecting big returns in revenue and reputation.

The terminal, a public-private partnership between Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and Galveston Wharves, elevates Galveston’s position as a major player among US cruise ports.

Royal Caribbean Oasis-class Allure of the Seasone of the largest cruise ships in the world sailing today and carrying 6,780 passengers, left the port of Galveston on November 13 for its maiden voyage on a seven-night Western Caribbean itinerary.

The impact of the terminal A “game changer”

In a statement with Royal Caribbean celebrating the grand opening of the new terminal, Port of Galveston Director Rodger Rees called the $125 million terminal a game-changer, saying it would generate 800 new jobs for the region. and $1.4 billion in local business services revenue.

The sprawling terminal, with 161,000 square feet on 10 acres, can accommodate up to 630,000 cruisers embarking in Galveston. The port has two other cruise terminals, but neither can accommodate the largest ships in the industry.

“As the only cruise homeport in Texas, we attract more than one million cruise passengers a year in a market of 30 million people,” said Rees, referring to pre-Covid statistics from 2019, when around 1.1 million cruisers boarded in Galveston.

In 2020, only 228,000 did so, according to port records. Other key drive-to markets that compete with Galveston include New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama.

“There were doubts” Rees noted in a separate statement, “when Covid caused delays after the project was announced in 2019, but we all kept the faith. Thank you Royal Caribbean for your commitment to this project and for believing in Galveston during a difficult time for the cruise industry and ports across the United States”

Michael Bayley, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean, said the cruise line is “delighted to take family vacations to a whole new level in Texas.”

“Our new 161,334 square foot terminal opens up a world of vacation possibilities for families in the South West. Now our unrivaled Oasis-class ships, known as the best family vacations in the industry, can depart from Galveston,” he saidadding that Allure of the Seas “this is just the beginning.”

Record year expected in 2023

Like other cruise ports around the world, Galveston is banking on a banner year in 2023 as the cruise industry continues to stabilize and vacationers return to sea in large numbers.

Rees predicted the Port of Galveston will break records next year, with 362 sailings and a record number of cruise passengers leaving the port.

Rees said the forecast points to $58.7 million in total revenue at the port, including $40.5 million from its cruise business. He added that Galveston Wharves would be “reinvesting Port revenues to benefit the Galveston community with economic growth, jobs, and sales tax revenue. State and local taxes will generate nearly an additional $6 million,” he said.

Allure of the Seas will continue to operate seven-night Western Caribbean cruises through 2022, then offer four- and five-night cruises to Costa Maya and Cozumel in January.

Royal Caribbean Adventure of the seas, also homeported in Galveston, is currently sailing a series of four- and five-night cruises to Costa Maya and Cozumel. The ship can accommodate 3,835 guests.

From January 30, the 2,466 guests of Royal The shine of the seas will operate nine- and 10-night cruises from Galveston to the Western Caribbean, Southern Caribbean, Colombia, Panama and the Bahamas.

Four Carnival Cruise Line ships are also homeported in Galveston, including carnival breeze, Carnival Dreamand Carnival Vista. Carnival Jubilee will leave the port next year.

Drones – small remote-controlled flying devices, many equipped with cameras – have become one of the best ways to take aerial photos of some of the world’s most scenic destinations, as well as footage from cruise ships. With that in mind, many travelers are understandably curious if they can take drones on cruises and if they can fly a drone on a cruise ship.

As of press time, only three of the eight major cruise lines in the industry allow passengers to board drones.

Even in cases where drones are allowed, cruisers cannot fly them from the ship. They are intended for use in port only, and cruisers are responsible for adhering to all local regulations, including rules on how far drones must remain from buildings, vessels, and restricted areas, such as airports. In some cases, the location may require a permit to use the drone. Passengers who fail to comply with any of these regulations risk incurring fines or having their drones confiscated by their cruise line or local authorities.

Here is an overview of cruise line drone policies.

Carnival Cruise Line’s drone policy allows cruise lines to bring drones for port use only. The aircraft must be stored with the Chief of Security and checked and handed over by the owner upon disembarkation and return to the vessel.

Celebrity Cruises

On Celebrity ships, drones are only permitted ashore and must be used outside the port area. When on board the ship, they must be stored in the passenger cabins. Anyone caught using a drone on board will receive a driving warning from guests and could risk temporary confiscation of the drone, as well as early disembarkation.

Royal Caribbean’s new home in Galveston, Texas is open to cruise ships.

Galveston Terminal 3 is Royal Caribbean’s newest cruise terminal, purpose-built to allow the cruise line to dispatch the world’s largest cruise ships.

The new $125 million cruise terminal is a symbol of the cruise line’s dedication to the Galveston cruise market, and following the tradition set by Royal Caribbean’s other recently constructed buildings, it’s spectacular to behold.

I was invited to sail Allure of the Seas for a 4 night preview event, where we got to walk around and see the new cruise terminal.

The new terminal is located at Pier 10 for the exclusive use of Royal Caribbean.

The building measures 161,300 square feet and is a state-of-the-art building, including mobile check-in and facial recognition to expedite guest arrival.

It will be a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified terminal, which means it is environmentally friendly and uses resources efficiently.

Architects Bermello Ajamil & Partners Inc. envisioned the look of the new terminal, but this firm is no stranger to Royal Caribbean. They also designed Miami’s Terminal A, Cape Liberty Cruise Terminal, and Port Everglades Terminals 18 and 25.

Not only can Terminal 3 accommodate Oasis Class ships, it will also be able to accommodate Royal Caribbean’s new Icon Class ships.

Let’s take a virtual tour in and around the new terminal!

Outside

Similar to other new cruise terminals Royal Caribbean has built recently, the new Galveston terminal is bright with lots of big name brands.

When driving, there is a pick-up and drop-off area, with multiple lanes to allow cars to easily enter and exit.

Wearers of the new terminal all have a new Caribbean-inspired design, which they say they’ll wear every day.

There is parking available in 4 different lots at the terminal.

Once you have dropped off your luggage, the entrance is towards the front of the terminal.

Keep in mind that the waiting area if you have a late check in time was discovered by the sun the day I was there.

Entrance way

Once inside the new cruise terminal, you are greeted by a cavernous lobby.

Similar to PortMiami’s Terminal A, there are different ways to enter for suite guests and everyone else. The large helices hanging from the ceiling are also similar to Terminal A.

The main entrance for most customers will be the escalator on the left. There is also an elevator.

Registration

Your first stop inside the terminal will be for check-in.

Agents line up to check you in by scanning your SetSail pass. This is when you finish online check-in before the cruise is chargeable, because if you do everything in advance, it will only take a few seconds.

Once you’ve completed check-in, you’ll go through security. This is when your bags and personal effects are scanned.

Suite Space

The new Galveston Cruise Terminal has a special area for suite guests.

When you enter the terminal, there is a special entrance for suite guests.

This not only means a shorter wait, but it speeds up the physical transfer process from the curb to the waiting area.

WAITING ROOM

Once you have passed the security check, you will have a seat in the waiting area if the ship is not yet ready to embark.

There are plenty of comfortable sofas on both sides of the huge room.

There are also toilets here and vending machines, if you need them.

There is also a fun instagrammable wall.

You will also find great artwork from local artists.

Forged in stainless steel and lost-wax bronze, the Galveston Beach Trio is the epitome of island time and a vibrant first impression. It is the creation of Brad Oldham Sculpture, based in Texas.

Boarding and gangway

When they call you to board your ship, the process is like any other cruise terminal.

Your SetSail pass is scanned one last time, then you walk down a hallway, where you can stop to take a photo with the ship.

Then it’s on the boat and we walk on board!

Port of Galveston Parking Coupon

The Port of Galveston is running a special offer for port parking during the month of November.

If you pre-book your parking in November, you can save $10 with promo code THANK YOU.

Cruise ships desert China as Beijing reaffirms zero-Covid commitment https://infos-voyage.com/cruise-ships-desert-china-as-beijing-reaffirms-zero-covid-commitment/ Mon, 07 Nov 2022 01:00:16 +0000 https://infos-voyage.com/cruise-ships-desert-china-as-beijing-reaffirms-zero-covid-commitment/ Jessi Chen “had the best time” when she hosted her bachelorette party with around 50 friends on a “cruise to nowhere” trip to Hong Kong a year ago. “It was really fun,” the business executive, in her 30s, told the Financial Times of her trip aboard Dream Cruises’ 1,674-cabin Genting Dream, a round trip three […]]]>

Jessi Chen “had the best time” when she hosted her bachelorette party with around 50 friends on a “cruise to nowhere” trip to Hong Kong a year ago.

“It was really fun,” the business executive, in her 30s, told the Financial Times of her trip aboard Dream Cruises’ 1,674-cabin Genting Dream, a round trip three days in international waters and then back to Hong Kong. It was her first time on a cruise ship in Asia, and she enjoyed it so much that she looked forward to another trip at a time when international travel was virtually impossible due to Covid-19 restrictions.

But then authorities also suspended cruises to nowhere. Hong Kong as well as mainland China, with its commitment to zero-Covid, has been all but abandoned by international cruise lines and Chen may have to wait months before being able to sail from the port of Victoria again.

As global cruise bookings reach pre-pandemic levels, analysts and industry insiders have said a sector recovery in China and Asia could only begin after 2024, given that ocean liners usually plan their operations a year or more in advance.

Carnival’s Costa Cruises, which had a strong presence in Asia with a quarter of its fleet stationed in the region, suspended sailings due to uncertainties surrounding a rebound in tourism. Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises no longer deploy ships to the region, while Genting Hong Kong, which operated Dream Cruises, went bankrupt this year.

Royal Caribbean bases only one of its cruises, the 2,137-cabin Spectrum of the Seas, in Singapore as its home port, as its former port of Hong Kong only lifted cruise restrictions in October.

The Asia-Pacific region, thanks to a rapidly growing Chinese market, accounted for up to a fifth of global revenue for major cruise lines before 2019.

But the pandemic has caused passenger volumes in Asia to plummet by 3.7 million to 626,000, according to Cruise Lines International Association, an industry body. Passenger numbers in mainland China fell 99% to just 6,000 last year from nearly 2 million in 2019.

Cathy Hsu, a professor at the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said it could take another two to three years for Asia to experience a post-Covid rebound.

“A full recovery to the pre-pandemic level [in Asia] will be difficult without the continent [Chinese] tourists,” Hsu said. “As long as there are political uncertainties, international cruise lines will most likely stay away from making commitments.”

Hopes of easing travel dimmed after China’s Communist Party reaffirmed its commitment to its rigid zero-Covid policy last month at its national congress. Hong Kong’s borders are still not fully open, with all incoming travelers barred from restaurants, bars and clubs for the first three days of arrival.

The Chinese Territory’s Kai Tak cruise terminal in Kowloon, which once hosted the region’s largest cruise ships, has been turned into a 786-bed government quarantine facility. Jeff Bent, managing director of Worldwide Cruise Terminals, which manages Kai Tak, expected “it will take a few years before we get back to the same breadth of cruise lines we had in the past.”

Trey Hickey, a former senior Carnival executive, told the Financial Times that most major cruise lines focus on their core domestic businesses in Europe and the United States rather than emerging markets such as Asia in the middle. of the “financial and reputational damage the industry has suffered”. .

Cruise lines including Carnival had to refinance large amounts of corporate debt after borrowing heavily amid the pandemic, while the industry suffered damaging publicity when passengers were trapped on cruise ships invaded by Covid at the beginning of the epidemic.

But Hickey thinks companies that stay engaged in the region could be rewarded.

Silversea Cruises, operated by Royal Caribbean, has planned Asia cruises that will call in Hong Kong in early 2023, although they will not stop at mainland Chinese ports. Norwegian Cruise Lines has announced that it will bring one of its cruises, the Norwegian Jewel, back to Asia from October next year.

And Carnival’s joint venture partnership with China State Shipbuilding Corporation, CSSC-Carnival, is expected to deliver its first cruise ship to service mainland China in 2023.

“The scale and potential of the Chinese market is not diminished” when it finally opens up to the world, said Brian King of Texas A&M University. But, he added, “there is a need to rebuild trust and faith.”

According to Chen, the business leader, cruise ships should tap into a younger clientele, who have taken a liking to life at sea when all other leisure travel was banned.

But Royal Caribbean, which saw its Asia-Pacific share of global revenue fall from around 15% in 2019 to just 9% last year, told the FT it had “no idea when where we will resume service in mainland China.” .

“China is the engine of growth. . . and is now the only market with no return to service,” the company said. “Hopefully that will start to change in 2023.”

Windstar Cruises has named Betsy O’Rourke Chief Commercial Officer and promoted Dianna Rom to Vice President of Sales.

Previously, O’Rourke spent ten years as chief commercial officer of Xanterra Travel Collection, which is Windstar’s parent company, before overseeing Windstar’s commercial functions from 2020, according to a press release.

“We couldn’t be happier to have Betsy focused entirely on the future of Windstar,” said Windstar Cruises President Christopher Prelog. “She has stepped up and guided us through the challenges presented by the pandemic and her expertise has set us on the right path to success in the luxury cruise market.”

Skagway’s hopes of welcoming up to four cruise ships a day in 2023 took a step back this week as the results of a simulation project prevented at least one major cruise line from agreeing to use a reconfigured Ore Dock.

At its last regular meeting, the Skagway Assembly agreed to an opt-out agreement with White Pass and Yukon Route that would allow the municipality early access to the ore wharf improvement before the lease expires. 55 years with the railway company next March. .

The agreement allows White Pass to leave the infrastructure in place at the Ore and Broadway wharves while the municipality takes over the contaminated mineral pond remediation project at costs of up to $15 million.

But this week, the alternative berthing plan to expand Ore Pier to allow post-Panamax-size cruise ships — built too big to pass through the Panama Canal — to dock there in 2023 no longer seems viable.

At a special budget meeting on Wednesday evening, Borough Manager Brad Ryan told the House that Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines was the first company to say it would not use the alternate berthing plan. Ore Dock as it is currently designed.

“It’s not that they can’t come in and dock it, they did in the simulation, they just don’t like the clearance distance between the wings of these larger ships and the ship of Broadway,” Ryan said.

RCL suggested adding an additional 132 feet of wharf length to extend the ore wharf farther south than the alternative berthing plan suggests. But that means installing a deep-sea dolphin that could take the cost of the project from the original estimate of $6 million to more than $26 million.

“That puts piles in 155 feet of water. And we think that’s about a $10 million dolphin,” Ryan said.

Without permits or source materials, Ryan doesn’t think it’s something that can be achieved by next season. This could therefore give Skagway the chance to accommodate four cruise ships a day next year depending on the landslide mitigation project above the railway quay.

A special Assembly meeting was held on Friday afternoon. Audio of this meeting can be found on Skagway.org.

Covid hasn’t really gone away. The disease has apparently become less deadly as vaccines and treatments have become more readily available, but the pandemic is not over. It just moved to a new stage where people worry less about getting sick and take fewer precautions.

With hospitals having room to treat the most severe cases, covid has come a little closer to the flu – at least in the way we treat it as a society. This means that most areas of American life have abandoned any pretense of worrying about covid.

Following the vessel’s recent drydocking and upgrades, Carnival Conquest is now home to the first dedicated pickleball court for the Fun Ship fleet, located on the top deck of the ship and offering exceptional views as well as energetic competition for this popular sport.

New pickleball court added during dry dock

The new court, designed exclusively for pickleball, was added when the ship was recently dry-docked and gives passengers the opportunity to enjoy this burgeoning sport.

Pickleball, which can be played by players of all ages and abilities, is a fast-paced sport that combines tennis, badminton and table tennis. Players hit a perforated hollow ball over a net using solid-faced paddles and can play singles or doubles. Depending on the facilities, pickleball can be played indoors or outdoors.

Carnival ConquestThe new court is outdoors, offering great sea views and plenty of sunshine for every match.

The game was first invented in 1965, but has recently grown in popularity in the United States and around the world. Over 4.8 million players are in the United States alone, and pickleball was named the fastest growing sport in the United States by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association in 2022 and 2022.

Crew members on board have already tried the short, giving it a practice session before the ship is returned to service.

Whereas Carnival Conquest is the first Carnival ship to have a permanent pickleball court, the game can be played on several other ships. Pickleball facilities have recently been added to most ships which already have basketball courts, where pickleball can easily be played.

Pickleball courts are typically 44 feet long by 20 feet wide (13.4 by 6.1 meters), while basketball courts are typically 94 feet long by 50 feet wide (28.6 by 15. 2 meters). For recreational play, pickleball could be played across a basketball court, allowing two pickleball games at a time.

Because the courts are smaller, pickleball is an ideal addition to sports venues on cruise ships, where deck space may be limited, and the court can also be used for other sports.

Pickleball is one more addition to the cruise ship’s SportSquare offerings, which also include miniature golf, volleyball, and basketball.

Other Drydock Improvements

Carnival Conquestthe first of the popular Conquest class of ships, received more than just a pickleball court during her recent drydock.

In addition to the new sports facility, the ship received routine hotel maintenance and cosmetic refreshes in public areas, as well as the new Carnival Adventures Store and Dreams Studio spaces.

The ADA-enhanced cabins have also been updated for better accessibility.

Finally, the ship also received the new red-white-and-blue livery hull colors who made his debut with Mardi Gras in 2021, and have been gradually rolled out to other ships in the fleet as they undergo scheduled updates in drydock.

Guests on board Carnival Conquest, or other ships where pickleball equipment is available, can play the sport at their leisure whenever the field is open and available. Depending on interest, there may be onboard tournaments, classes or competitions held on individual cruises.

Cruising sailors should note that the outdoor court will be closed in the event of adverse weather conditions such as heavy rain or excessive wind which may make playing too dangerous.

The 110,000 gross tons Carnival Conquest operates 3-4 night round trip cruises from Miami, Florida, with Caribbean (East, West and South) and Bahamas itineraries available. The ship can accommodate 2,980 guests on board, with 1,150 international crew members providing superior service – and maybe some pickleball tips.
