Firefighters prevented a large country fire in East Tilbury from spreading to Coalhouse Fort, a nearby church and homes this afternoon.

Crews were called to land off Princess Margaret Road at 10.54am to report a major fire on the ground. The fire damaged eight hectares of land but was brought under control through hard work and team effort by 2:43 p.m.

Group manager Marc Diggory said: ‘The fire started in the nature reserve next to the dyke and spread rapidly. The police worked with us to evacuate 20 homes, the Coalhouse Fort visitor center, St. Catherine’s Church and the parking lot as a precaution. We quickly put our resources in place, which meant we could contain it and prevent it from spreading further.

“The firefighters worked so hard and were supported by park rangers and local farmers who helped create fire breaks and trails for us to access the fire. Police and ambulance were on the scene and the police were coordinating the evacuation. It was a real team effort.”

The cause of the fire is undetermined. Teams will remain on site tonight to monitor hot spots.
