KCC calls for measures to strengthen social harmony
Religious and political leaders should take concrete steps to strengthen social harmony and promote peaceful coexistence, the Kerala Council of Churches (KCC) said.
At a joint press conference in Mavelikara on Friday, Vice President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) Joshua Mar Ignathios, KCC Vice President Alexios Mar Eusebius, KCC General Secretary Prakash P. Thomas and Mavelikara Imam Abdul Waheed Moulavi Al Qasimi have expressed their concerns about statements and approaches that destroy humanity.
They called for an end to community campaigns, including on social media, as they would only help polarize society on religious grounds. People should join hands in the fight against drug use, violence and terrorism. It was our responsibility to defend national integrity and secular and democratic values. It wasn’t fair to blame an entire community for the mistakes of a small section. Leaders of various religions should come forward to point out and rectify errors within their communities, they said.
On questions regarding the Bishop of Pala’s “narcotic jihad” jibe, Metropolitan Ignathios said the United Nations had mentioned it earlier. âForced religious conversion is bad. But it’s happening, âhe said.
Metropolitan Eusebius said terrorism was not confined to one religion.
