Native Trail: 18th individual top-flight winner for Oasis Dream and from a full sister of African Rose and Helleborine

The old adage that form is temporary and class is permanent could easily apply to a number of alumni in the stallion ranks, but particularly to the venerable Oasis Dream, whose Native Trail has made its way to a sparkling success in the Vincent O ‘Brien Goffs National Stakes at Curragh on Sunday.
Third race winner in four years for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin after Quorto and Pinatubo, the imposing colt certainly seems to have solid claims at this stage to be the best two-year-old in Europe – he was cut overall 4-1 favoritism for Qipco’s 2,000 Guineas – and has a pedigree to match his presence and talent.
Bred by Le Haras d’Haspel, the foal is the second foal of Needleaf, an unprecedented breed of Juddmonte, a full sister of the Observatory of the winner of the Haydock Sprint Cup and of the French juvenile Group 3 winner Helleborine, the dam from the winner of Coventry and now stallion of Coolmore Calice.
Needleleaf, a half-sister of Quest For Fame, Dewhurst winner Distant Music, was sold to MAB for 60,000 gns in the December 2015 mare sale at Tattersalls. She produced a Siyouni filly this quarter and was subsequently bred by Cracksman.
Native Trail was a ⬠50,000 purchase by Sam Sangster during the December Arqana sale, before reselling it to Mags O’Toole and Oak Tree Farm for 67,000 gns from Tattersalls Book 1, when it was released. shipped by Kildaragh Stud.
It was the subject of a big comeback for Oak Tree Farm when it was sold to Godolphin for 210,000 gns at this year’s Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up sale. The windfall continued as the colt also raised £ 125,000 from Craven Group 1 Bonus from Tattersalls – a prize of £ 100,000 to Godolphin and £ 25,000 to Norman Williamson of Oak Tree.

Her three-and-a-half-length success on Point Lonsdale provided yet another update for her half-sister’s page, Kingman’s daughter selling to Godolphin for ⬠950,000 in Arqana’s August sale.
Oasis Dream, the source of top talent such as Midday, Power, Muhaarar, Pretty Pollyanna and Goldream, was also present in the bloodlines of the Irish hero of St Leger Sonnyboyliston, who provided Power with another high profile success after Helvic. Dream. and index laws in Europe this year.
It was a day for well-related youngsters to make their mark in Groups 1 at the Curragh, as Discoveries paid a fitting tribute to the late Mastercraftsman by throwing themselves into the Moyglare Stud Stakes.
The filly of the Niarchos family is the third individual high level winner for the remarkable Alpha Lupi, a daughter of Rahy and the double heroine of the French Classic East Of The Moon, herself from the Miesque who shaped the breed, and a full or half-sister to the great Alpha Centauri and winner of the Coronation Stakes last year, Alpine Star.
Alpha Lupi has a one-year-old brother-in-law at Discoveries and a 2000 Guineas colt and Vertem Fururity Stakes winner Magna Grecia. It was picked up by Sea The Stars this year.
