MARION – Owners of the brand new outdoor powersports store in Southern Illinois welcomed Marion City and Chamber of Commerce officials, as well as the general public, to a grand opening Friday afternoon in the old Toys “R” Us building on the west end of town.

Oasis Outdoors – Powersports technically opened in April, but inventory has been steadily increasing over the past few months leading up to the grand opening and ribbon cutting. The new company is part of the Black Diamond Harley-Davison family jointly owned by Rodney Cabaness and Shad Zimbro.

“Thank you for being part of this celebration with us today,” Cabaness told a gathering of more than 100 attendees.

Cabaness happened to be celebrating her birthday.

“We think Marion is a great place to live and recreate and we’re excited to bring the Oasis brand here,” he said. “We hope Southern Illinois will one day be an oasis for the rest of the country. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Zimbro said the new venture coincides with the 15th anniversary of Black Diamond Harley-Davison’s opening.

“We opened on August 7, 2007, so here we are 15 years later with all the other brands and manufacturers in the motorcycle industry. And that’s really cool.”

Zimbro said renovating the building and adding inventory have been priorities in recent months.

“We sold our inventory as fast as we could get it,” he said. “All side-by-sides are so important right now. And a lot of golf carts, even, because people can use them in the towns and villages around here now.”

Ultimately, Zimbro said, the powersports and lawn care products will be moved to the old Illinois Center Mall building, where there is significantly more storage and display space.

“We’re leaving it here until we’ve finished the mall inside. It will be a few years though before everything gets moved in there. In the meantime, it’s a great facility – a nice building. So why not use it It works perfectly for us right now.

The Toys “R” Us store closed in March 2018. The building was vacant except for a seasonal Halloween pop-up store.

“Now Oasis Outdoors – Powersports is bringing much bigger toys,” said general manager Randy Pace. “We carry a huge selection of ATVs, watercraft, side-by-sides, dirt bikes and more from well-known national manufacturers like Yamaha, Kawasaki, Can-Am, Arctic Cat and Sea-Doo. The fun starts here. – from the casual cyclist to the weekend warrior – to the competitive racer. We have it all.”

Pace said he moved to Marion from a big market in Springfield, Missouri to “be a part of what’s happening here in Marion. It’s just amazing.”

There will be no shortage of inventory at Oasis in the future.

“What’s really exciting about the motorsports industry is that we’re in a four-season climate,” he said. “Obviously we’re not going to be doing jet skis and Sea-Doos in the winter, but we still have motorcycles, side-by-sides, dirt bikes and even enclosed units that have heat and air. So it really is a four-season sports store.”

Pace said there are currently over 20 full-time employees working at Oasis Outdoors – Powersports – from sales staff to parts and merchandisers, full service technicians and more.

“And I could see it jumping in the hundreds,” he said. “There are going to be quite a few jobs available.”

Marion Mayor Mike Absher said he has always called the town “an oasis of opportunity” and that the opening of the new store – the latest venture from Black Diamond Harley-Davison – is “indicative of what I had hoped”.

Sen. Dale Fowler and Chamber of Commerce President Jared Garrison also spoke briefly at Friday’s meeting.
