Royal Caribbean adds COVID-19 to cruise contract for all passengers


The contract you accept when you book a cruise now includes additional information regarding COVID-19.

Royal Caribbean has updated its cruise contract with new language related to the current global health crisis at some point in recent months.

Section 4 of the contract which simply covered “medical care and other personal services” has been updated to now cover “public health, COVID-19 policies and procedures, accepting risks”.

What is a cruise contract?

If you’ve been on a cruise before, you have agreed to many other protocols and policies as part of Royal Caribbean‘s cruise contract.

Each cruise line includes this as part of the deal you make when you book a cruise.

When making a deposit, Royal Caribbean adds a checkbox to indicate that the customer has read the cruise contract and accepts everything in it.

Airlines also have something similar, known as Conditions of Carriage, which covers almost any scenario a passenger may face to clearly state the expectations for rules and penalties for violating those rules. .

Recommended consultation with a personal physician

Passengers are encouraged to discuss their cruise ship trip with their personal physician and to visit the US Centers for Disease Control (“CDC”) website for an update.

In addition, passengers recognize, understand and accept the risk of contracting COVID-19, influenza and / or Norovirus on board the ship, in the terminal or ashore.

Additionally, customers understand that there is a limit to what Royal Caribbean can do to limit exposure and that not all risks can be eliminated.

“The passenger knowingly and voluntarily accepts these risks under this ticketing contract, including the risk of serious illness or death resulting from such exposures, and / or all associated damages, losses, costs and expenses of any kind. it would be. “

Agreement to abide by current COVID-19 policies and procedures

Passengers agree to adhere to Royal Caribbean health protocols at all times, including prior to embarkation, on board, during stopovers and shore excursions and / or final disembarkation.

These health policies are subject to change based on guidance and direction from health authorities established in the United States and other destinations where the ship

COVID-19 Policies and Procedures

Royal Caribbean lists some (but not all) of the health policies to follow:

  2. Temperature tests and checks before boarding and / or periodically for each Passenger

  6. Additional restrictions on shore excursions based on local conditions including, but not limited to, denial of disembarkation at destination, unless you are only participating in carrier approved shore excursions
  7. Mandatory hand disinfection by the passenger when entering or leaving any public space

  10. Other policies and procedures deemed by the Carrier, in its sole discretion, necessary to reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19

Mandatory compliance with COVID-19 policies and procedures

“Any failure by the Passenger or members of the Passenger’s travel group to comply with the carrier’s COVID-19 policies and procedures or this ticketing contract will be grounds for denied boarding, refusal to re-board after disembarking , quarantine on board the ship, disembarkation, reporting to government or health authorities. competent authorities, or other measures deemed necessary in the sole discretion of the Carrier in the circumstances to protect the health and well-being of others. “

If someone violates any of the COVID-19 policies and procedures, it is a reason for the passenger not to receive a refund or compensation of any kind.

The Passenger will be responsible for all related costs and fines, including, without limitation, travel costs and appropriate travel documents for any port, or for departure or arrival in the Passenger’s country of residence. .

Passenger tested positive for COVID-19 pre-cruise

Within 14 days of starting the cruise, if a passenger tests positive for COVID-19, shows signs or symptoms of COVID-19, has had close contact with someone confirmed or suspected to have COVID-19 , Royal Caribbean reserves the right to deny boarding to such person.

In such a situation, any passenger denied boarding due to a known or suspected infection with COVID-19 will be entitled to a refund or future cruise credit of a value equal to the passenger at the cruise fare paid. at Royal Caribbean.

Passenger tested positive for COVID-19 during cruise

If you test positive for COVID-19 or exhibit symptoms, Royal Caribbean may disembark, refuse to re-embark after a shore excursion, or quarantine the Passenger and members of the Passenger’s travel party, or take other measures that the Carrier determines, at its sole discretion. , are necessary in the circumstances to protect the health and well-being of others.

If this should happen, you are entitled to a prorated refund or future cruise credit for the unused portion of the cruise fare.

Each of these Passengers is responsible for all other related costs and fines, including, without limitation, travel expenses.
